Scott A. Gradwell, D.M.D., F.A.G.D, P.C.

You know them as gums – the soft, pink tissue that supports your teeth. Professionally, gums are also known as periodontal tissues or soft tissues. A periodontist has specialized training in maintaining the health and aesthetics of your gums. One of the most important periodontal services we offer includes the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of gum disease. Other periodontal treatments include gum recontouring (shaping a “gummy smile”) and soft-tissue grafting.

Crown-Lengthening Surgery - Periodontal procedures are available to lay the groundwork for restorative and cosmetic dentistry and/or to improve the health and esthetics of your smile.  Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that recontours the gum tissue and often the underlying bone surrounding one or more teeth so that an adequate amount of healthy tooth is exposed.  Crown lengthening is often used as part of a treatment plan for a tooth that is to be fitted with a crown.  This procedure provides the necessary space between the supporting bone and crown, preventing the new crown from damaging gum tissues and bone.  Your dentist may also recommend crown lengthening in order to make a restorative procedure possible.  If a tooth is badly worn, decayed or fractured below the gum line, crown lengthening adjusts the gum and bone levels to gain access to more of the tooth so it can be restored.

Gum Disease Therapy – Did you know that up to 80% of American adults have some form of gum disease? Without treatment, gum disease devours gum tissue and eventually leads to tooth loss. At our practice, we offer innovative gum disease treatments, such as deep cleanings, surgery, and Arestin antibiotic therapy. When appropriate, we are able to provide BioLase™ laser surgical procedures for pocket decontamination and pocket reduction. This process will allow the removal of bacteria that are potentially life threatening. Medical literature has substantiated the correlation between periodontal disease and gingivitis with increased risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Aesthetic Gum Recontouring "Gummy Smile"  – Does too much gum tissue show when you smile? With aesthetic recontouring, also called a gingivectomy, Dr. Gradwell can gently remove excess gum tissue, revealing bright, white teeth and a bold, new smile.

Soft-Tissue Grafts – When gums recede and expose tooth roots, you can experience sensitivity and are at a higher risk of disease and decay. A soft-tissue (gum) graft is a procedure in which Dr. Gradwell covers the exposed tooth root, thereby improving esthetics and alleviating tooth sensitivity.
